Offline Plays with no signal once it's on your device Usually needs a connection

How pricing works

BookNPC has two kinds of books, priced differently. The books you bring are free to listen to with your device's voice, always. On them, you pay only for optional per-book extras: a full cast (a one-time, page-by-page analysis that gives each character a voice), translation into another language (the same analysis, at a higher price per page), and studio cloud audio (GPU rendering, billed by the finished audio-hour). Mix them however you like, and switch any time. The catalog of ready-made classics is a separate free lane that credits never touch: you get 60 minutes of listening a day, with more from a short ad or the ad-free plan.

Why the price varies

  • Casting: longer books have more pages to analyze
  • Studio audio: billed by the finished hour, so longer books cost more
  • Translating a book adds an analysis pass; on-device playback skips rendering entirely

Good to know

  • Casting and translating together is one analysis at about 7¢ a page, not two charges
  • A cast book plays free on your device forever; only cloud studio audio costs more

Pricing FAQ

Do I need a subscription?

No. The narrator with your device's voices is free forever, with no hour limits, and on your own books you pay only for the optional per-book extras: a full cast, translation, and studio cloud audio. There is one subscription, Ad-free, but it's entirely optional: it just removes ads and the catalog's daily listening limit.

When does something cost money?

Three things, all per book and all optional: casting the characters (a one-time page-by-page analysis, about 3¢ a page), translating the book into another language (the same analysis at about 7¢ a page, which covers the casting too), and studio cloud audio (25¢ per finished audio-hour). They are independent: a cast book can play with free on-device voices, and a plain narrator can get studio audio.

Do I pay for whole hours at a time?

No. Rendering is metered by the second of finished audio; 25¢ an hour is just the rate in a readable unit. A 40-minute book costs about 17¢ of rendering, and you are only ever charged for audio you actually got. The app shows the price before a cast starts, and you can start it from any page: nothing before that page is cast or charged.

Is the narrator always free?

With your device's voices and in the book's own language, yes: unlimited and offline, no analysis needed. Choosing studio cloud audio for the narrator costs only the rendering (25¢ per finished hour).

Is full cast free when it plays on my device?

The playback is free; the one-time casting analysis still applies, so a full-cast book costs something even on-device. Narrator listening with on-device voices is completely free.

Is the free catalog really free?

Yes, once you sign in (that's free too). Catalog books are already produced, so they never use credits. Listening draws on a free daily allowance of 60 minutes that refills every day; watch a short ad to add 30 more, or the ad-free plan removes the limit.

Can I go back to free?

Any time. You can switch between the free on-device narrator and the cast version whenever you like, even in the middle of a chapter.

What is the ad-free plan?

An optional US$2.99 / month (or US$29.99 / year) plan that removes ads and lifts the daily limit on catalog listening. It doesn't change anything else: your own books are still free, and the per-book upgrades are still paid per book.
